AI: The Greatest Advancement or the Greatest Threat to Humanity?

What exactly is artificial intelligence? Is it the best or the worst thing that could happen to humanity? Was AI created for our benefit or to our detriment? Let’s explore the advantages and disadvantages of AI and consider how it might shape our lives.

The Benefits of AI

AI is already transforming various fields. For instance, it can assist with different tasks such as writing exercises, composing letters, and even crafting scripts for plays and movies. It can also compose music and help reduce human workload. Moreover, AI can automate repetitive and mundane tasks, allowing people to focus on more meaningful activities and improving their overall well-being.

AI systems are also capable of processing multiple variables simultaneously to provide optimized solutions and recommendations. This is especially valuable in the medical field, where accurate diagnoses and treatment plans are crucial. AI can analyse blood test results and suggest the most effective treatments, ultimately helping to extend and even save human and animal lives.

However, every technology has two sides.

The Darker Sides

In many cases, an advantage can also be a disadvantage. Some people thrive on routine, repetitive work—it gives their lives structure and purpose. But if AI takes over these tasks, what will be left for those individuals? There’s no guarantee they will suddenly become more creative or find a new sense of purpose.

Another major concern is the question of control. In whose hands will AI ultimately rest? Imagine a scenario where AI, instead of providing precise medical prescriptions, is deliberately instructed to harm patients based on the same detailed blood analysis. The potential for misuse is alarming.

AI: A Blessing or a Curse?

Speculating about whether AI is good or bad might be pointless. The world has evolved in a way that made AI’s invention inevitable. No one could have stopped it. Just like the atomic bomb—if it hadn’t been developed under Oppenheimer, it would have been created under someone else’s direction.

That’s simply how our world works. However, the fact that I can write these words today shows that humanity has, so far, been wise enough not to use the atomic bomb recklessly. Perhaps this gives us hope that AI, too, will be used primarily for the benefit of humanity.
